What does it mean to be on a “DIET”?

“Diet” my least favorite 4 letter word.

I am always a little offended when someone says it. I take it personally! Funny but true. Everyone at this time of year is dieting. “No thank you I can’t have that I’m on a diet” is the most commonly uttered words in January.

I remember growing up and my mom being on the grapefruit and cottage cheese diet. Yes that’s all she ate. I also remember my Grandma telling her to eat because no one liked her, she was a little crabby. ( sorry MOM). Dieting is what we do. We tell ourselves that we have to diet to lose weight. We have to restrict certain food groups until the weight is gone.

The definition of Diet is: noun 1. the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats. “a vegetarian diet” synonyms: selection of food, food, foodstuffs; More 2. a special course of food to which one restricts oneself, either to lose weight or for medical reasons. “I’m going on a diet” verb 1. restrict oneself to small amounts or special kinds of food in order to lose weight.

If you search diet you will get some great eating plans as well as some crazy stuff that is unlivable and sustainable. Over the years there have been amazing Diets out there.

To name a few

Cabbage Soup Diet

Yogurt and granola diet

Cottage cheese and grapefruit.

Low carb no carb

All raw diet

Lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup diet

Raw egg diet

Hard boiled egg diet. And on and on and on……

Diets that helped people lose weight and……. gain weight back! Diets are a quick fix. 90% of people who lose weight by dieting gain most or more of their weight back. That is a terrible statistic. There are also studies out there that say losing and gaining and losing and gaining may be worse for us than just staying the same weight. PS: I don’t recommend you stay at an unhealthy weight because of this study.

We are told lies everyday which some are true at the moment but when they are found to not be true we don’t let the truth in….especially if it a lie we LIKE! Example:

Muscle weighs more than fat: sorry it does not. A pound is a pound is a pound but Muscle is much smaller than fat so it takes up less space (picture popped popcorn and unpopped popcorn same pound much smaller space) and you LOOK better. When you go to the gym and the scale goes up it is not because you gained muscle (sorry) you gained fluid because you body thinks you have lost your mind and it needs to protect you from you. You don’t gain muscle you build it, it doesn’t replace fat.

Don’t get me wrong I am not criticizing anyone who is just after a quick weight loss and not worried about the future nor am I saying any specific “diet” is a bad thing. What I am saying is Dieting does not work if you want a healthy FOREVER lifestyle change. If you want to have one size in your closet that you can just go in and put on with no thought just know it is going to fit no matter what because you are doing everything you need to, to maintain your weight for life. DIETING wont work!

Want to know what will work? I have the answer’s! I really do and going to share them with you on Friday in this blog. Until then I really do hope you will think about everything I have said and decide if this is you. Until then go chew your celery that apparently burns more calories than it has when you eat it so it’s a negative calorie food……oh by the way that’s a false statement. Still I am not seeing the stores run out of celery.

Live a life you love ❤️
