Part one DoTERRA Essential oils: Using them Aromatically

Part One of a Three-Part Series: Educating Yourself About Essential Oils

Educating yourself before using essential oils is essential. Using them properly will not only save you money but also ensure you get the right benefits from them. It is crucial to use the very best quality oils when utilizing them in all three ways: aromatically, topically, and internally. You need to be confident that you are getting 100% pure oils.

How do Essential Oils help Aromatically?

The sense of smell is a powerful tool that can elicit physiological, mental, and emotional responses. Essential oils are readily volatile and quickly absorbed by the olfactory receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system through the olfactory nerve. The limbic system plays a significant role in various functions, including smell, emotions, behavior, and memory.

For this reason, essential oils have a particularly potent effect when applied aromatically. Some essential oils induce uplifting or invigorating effects, while others are more calming.

Aromatic use can help with:

  • Mood enhancement

  • Increased energy

  • Improved focus and concentration

  • Memory boost

  • Better sleep

Today, we are focusing on Aromatic use.

Aromatic use is the most well-known and safe method for everyone in most situations. The health benefits are amazing, and using diffusers instead of candles is much safer and more natural. There are several ways to use essential oils aromatically. For example, simply placing a drop in your hands and taking a few deep inhales can change your mood in mere moments.

Filling a diffuser with water and 3 to 6 drops of essential oil can clear the air in a home and change the moods of everyone in the room. Diffusing certain oils when you need to concentrate and focus can be very effective. Additionally, using a diffuser next to the bed with specific blends can help you or your children sleep better through the night. Remember, less is more; you do not need more than a few drops in a diffuser, and using too much can actually have the opposite effect of what you were looking for. So always remember, a drop or two is better than too much. Even if you don’t feel like you are smelling it, it is doing its job, I promise.

Other ways to use essential oils aromatically that you may not have thought of include:

  • Putting a drop or two on a cotton ball

  • Mixing a few drops of oil in a spray bottle with water and a tsp of vodka to spray on furniture, carpet, and countertops

  • Adding them to cleaning products

  • Using them with dryer balls or dryer sheets

  • Spritzing on clothing

Here are some of my favorite oils to diffuse for specific uses. Remember to use 2 to 4 drops in a diffuser and feel free to mix and match:

Mood: Peace, Balance, Elevation, Peppermint, Lemon, Citrus Bliss, Passion, Motivate, Cheer

Focus and Concentration: Rosemary, Peppermint, Wild orange, Lemon

These are just some suggestions; remember to use whatever works best for you.
