#13 Pause and be Mindful Each Day
The Power of the Pause:
Terry Hershey writes in his book, The Power of Pause, “While waiting for perfection, we pass on ordinary. While waiting for better, we don’t give our best effort to good. While waiting for new and improved, we leach the joy right out of the old and reliable.” He suggests that we pause and notice those ordinary moments. They are morsels with joy hidden deep within.
Doug King Said “Learn to pause or nothing worthwhile will catch up to you.”
I believe there are areas of our lives we need to pause and be mindful of everyday because we are all rushing around and not getting anything done.
Areas we may need to pause and be mindful:
React: take a breath, hold up a finger, listen, hear, put yourself in others shoes,
Ask this question “is my response needed?”
Answer: Emails, texts, phone calls, favors. Don’t be in such a hurry to respond. The expectation becomes immediate. Read it again. If it is an invitation? Be sure you are going because you truly want to not be out of obligation.
Clearly communicate your response.
Food: STOP! Ask Why am I choosing this? How will this make me feel? Am I hungry or emotional? Is there something else I can do to deal with what I am feeling?
In our Support groups
This week we talked about how pausing could help in our relationships, work environments and in our health and wellness. We shared ideas of things we could do instead of eating when we are not hungry, or making excuses for not being active.
